The Peace sign has been around for a long time. I first became aware of it in 1963. I finished high school and Thought, now what? The Vietnam war was going on, and the draft was going on; some of my friends joined up, but I did not because I had no parents but a grandmother who raised me. She was pushing 70 and needed me to help support her.
I went to work in downtown Dallas and was there when Kennedy was shot, but that is another story. I started to work and mix with other young people around town. We smoked pot and went to peace or anti-war events. The world was changing, and I started growing long hair and wearing tie-dye. Peace symbols and jewelry were everywhere. Hey, how long did the hippie times last? Well, it depends on who you ask, man. Some say it started in the 60s when the Beatles, Bob Dylan, and all those guys were making music that blew people’s minds. Others say it was earlier, like in the 50s when the Beat Generation and the counterculture rebelled against mainstream society. And some say it never really ended, you know? It just changed into different forms, like punk rock, new age, environmentalism, etc.
But if you want a simple answer, I’d say the hippie times peaked in the late 60s and early 70s, when significant events like Woodstock and the Summer of Love and the anti-war protests existed. That’s when the hippie movement was most visible and influential before corporations, the media, and the government co-opted it. That’s just my opinion, man. You can have your own as long as you’re calm, groovy, and don’t hurt anyone. Peace out!
