History
What is a Huey helicopter?
The Bell UH-1 Iroquois (nicknamed ” Huey “) is a military utility helicopter designed and produced by the American aerospace company Bell Helicopter. It is the first member of the prolific Huey family and the first turbine-powered helicopter in service with the United States military.
Personal Experience with the Huey
Somewhere between 1065 and 1067, I was flown from Dallas on Day Trips to, I think, a Base in Corpus Christy, Texas, to do Repair to Battle Damaged Huey Hellocopters. We put plates in the bottom to protect soldiers from bullets and shrapnel from explosives. This was ugly, sometimes having to clean out blood before starting. When I graduated from High School in 1963, I had a good friend living with me who wound up being a door gunner in a Huey, shooting a 50 caliber machine gun at many enemy soldiers. His name was Tommy, and the experience was more than he could imagine. I did not know what to say to him to make it any better or justifiable. He is Deceased now. Love you, Tommy, wherever you are.
